5 Simple Steps To Turn Your Blog Posts From Average To Amazing

Great content seems to be written specifically for you. It gets you so engrossed that time seems to take a standstill. It piques your curiosity, and then answers all your questions.

At the end, great content leaves you feeling that you didn’t waste your time; that you gained something valuable.

Such great content doesn’t just happen. It is the result of a deliberate and strategic process.

The good thing is that, with the right guidance, anyone can write awesome blog posts that readers love. Below, I’ll show you exactly how to write such blog posts in just 5 steps.

Step 1: Planning

Great content starts with planning. Before you sit down and open your word editor, you need to have a good idea of what you’re going to write.

During the planning stage, here are some questions you need to ask yourself:

  • What topic am I going to write about?
  • Who am I writing for? Who’s my target audience?
  • Why does this audience care about this topic?
  • What key thing do I want them to learn after reading my article?
  • What emotion do I want to evoke in my readers?
  • What action do I want readers to take after reading the article?

You probably noticed that most of the above questions relate to your audience. This is because you’re not writing for yourself. Great content is written with the audience in mind.

Step 2: Pick A Captivating Headline

Now that you know what you’re writing about and who you are writing for, the next step is to pick a befitting headline for your topic.

The headline is a reader’s first point of contact with your blog post. People will decide whether to read your blog post or not based on your headline, so you need an irresistible headline that immediately gets people interested.

A good way to do this is to tease your reader. Give them a hint of the value they’ll gain from the article, without giving away everything that is contained in the article. Using this tactic piques the reader’s curiosity. They’re interested in what you’re promising, but the only way to get it is to read the article.

Consider this headline:

How To Lose 20 Pounds In 30 Days With Calisthenics

This headline promises something readers want – losing 20 pounds in 30 days – but it also gives away the solution. There’s no need for the reader to read the rest of the article, because they already know the solution is calisthenics.

Now, consider this other headline:

Proven Way To Lose 20 Pounds In 30 Days Without Changing Your Diet

This headline promises readers that they can lose weight without the inconvenience of changing their diet. It also emphasizes that the tactic shared in the article is proven to work. However, it doesn’t give away the solution. To know the solution, you have to actually read the article.

Such headlines will get people clicking on your blog posts every single time.

Step 3: Grab Attention With An Alluring Introduction

You’ve succeeded in getting readers interested with your killer headline, but the work is not done yet.

Readers are very fickle. If you want them to keep reading your blog post, you need an alluring introduction that keeps them yearning for more, slowly pulling them deeper into the blog.

An effective way of writing such introductions is to consider your reader’s thoughts, and then address these thoughts in your introduction.

Let’s go back to this headline:

Proven Way To Lose 20 Pounds In 30 Days Without Changing Your Diet

What do you think your readers are thinking after reading such a headline?

Most would be skeptical about any tactics that promise weight loss without any diet change. With this in mind, you can introduce your blog post like this…

Proven Way To Lose 20 Pounds In 30 Days Without Changing Your Diet

Sounds impossible, right?

Everyone knows that to lose weight, you have to cut down on your carb intake.

Well, what if I told you that everyone is wrong?

This introduction meets the reader where they are by addressing their skepticism. It then turns what is considered by many to be a fact on its head.

With such an introduction, readers will be eager to know what knowledge you have that everyone else doesn’t.

Step 4: Deliver What You Promised

You’ve so far managed to lure your audience into your blog post. It’s now time to deliver what they came for – engaging, high value content that solves their problems.

The best way to deliver amazing content in the body of your post is to make your advice actionable. Share tips that your readers can replicate, rather than inspirational stuff that leaves them motivated, but without a clear idea of the steps they need to take.

Look at this example.

The best way to calm down your anxiety is to center your chi.

On the face of it, this looks like solid advice. Whenever you are feeling anxious, just center your chi, and poof! Your anxiety will be gone like the wind. It makes one feel inspired about conquering their anxiety.

The problem with the above example is that it doesn’t offer someone any actionable advice that they can replicate to calm down their anxiety. Many people don’t know what their chi is, let alone how to center it. Therefore, while the solution sounds inspiring, it doesn’t actually solve your reader’s problem.

A better example would be…

Whenever you notice you’re feeling anxious, stop whatever you are doing and take five deep breaths.

This is something that anyone can actually do to calm down their anxiety. This is what I mean by actionable advice.

Other things you can do to improve the quality of your content include…

  • Use examples and illustrations to explain what you mean.
  • Use subheadings to break down your blog post and make it scannable.
  • Use short sentences and short paragraphs to make your content easier to read.
  • Use active voice to make your writing clear, punchy, and to the point.

Step 5: Close With A Bang

A feeble ending can ruin an otherwise amazing blog post. Therefore, you want to close as strongly as your started.

Here are some things top writers do to close their blog posts with a bang:

  • They do not introduce any new information in the outro
  • They give a recap of what they covered in the blog post.
  • They give readers a pep talk to encourage them to take action

Replicate any of these as you wrap up your blog post, and your readers will be left with a positive feeling that your blog post added some value in their lives. This is the hallmark of a great blog post.

Wrapping Up

Anyone can sit on their computer and write, but if you want to consistently create amazing blog posts that attract tons of comments and shares, you have to create a formula for your art.

I have just shared with you the 5 step formula that top writers use to churn amazing blog posts week in week out. Here’s a recap of the formula:

  • Plan your post
  • Choose a killer headline for your post
  • Capture readers’ attention with an alluring introduction
  • Deliver what you promised
  • Close your post with a bang

Here’s the beautiful thing about formulas; they always work. All you need to do, therefore, is to replicate this formula whenever you sit down to write, and the result will always be awesome blog posts.
